Running red lights is dangerous and causes accidents and injuries. Drivers who cause you injury because they ran a red light should be liable for your losses, and a car accident lawyer can help.

When you are in a rush, whether to go to work, go home, or run a quick errand, stopping every time you encounter a red light might seem like an inconvenient delay. However, according to the National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR), a glaring number of drivers run red lights. This is why they are once again raising awareness to stop at red lights through the annual National Stop on Red Week. This campaign is designed to raise awareness about the hazards of running red lights and how it causes car accidents.

What Exactly is the National Stop on Red Week?

This 2021, National Stop on Red Week was from August 1 to 7. The Federal Highway Administration (FHA) created this campaign intending to educate drivers on the dangers that could happen when drivers run red lights and minimize the severity and number of traffic collisions. Put simply, drivers should always stop at red lights because not doing so could result in injury or death.

The NCSR states that running a red light is usually a result of distracted or aggressive driving and that it is 100% preventable. This is also why the campaign is pushing for more installations of red light cameras to help change these dangerous driving habits.

Vital Stats to Remember this Coming National Stop on Red Week

According to the Red Light Safety report by the NCSR:

  • Approximately 850 people were killed in 2019 due to crashes involving red-light running, according to the NHTSA.
  • The top cause of crashes in urban settings in the U.S. is red-light running, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
  • In 2019, about 3.5 million drivers were given a citation for running a red light, according to Verra Mobility.
  • A study by the IIHS found that red-light cameras decreased the deadly red-light running collision rate in big cities by 21% and the rate of all kinds of deadly collisions at intersections by 14%. In addition, road safety cameras significantly reduced red light violations across the country.
  • A 2012 Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) study found that red light cameras offer positive safety effects in intersections and reduced right-angle red-light running crashes, which could be particularly devastating, by up to 39%.

In addition, the NCSR says that 1 in 3 people in the U.S. know at least one person who got injured or was killed in a crash involving running a red light. This might be just a number, but that number represents a human life that was taken away in an instant because a negligent driver decided to run a red light.
